Captain's Mod and ship unlocks?

Hi,
I've been playing FTL for a while now, and frustratingly, have not yet unlocked the Crystal Cruiser. I don't want to cheat it into my hangar, I want to unlock it properly.

But, I've been hearing things about the Captain's mod, that makes me want to play. I've never modded FTL before, so my question is, is it still as hard to get the Crystal Cruiser as it is in vanilla? I don't want to install a mod, only to find myself easily unlocking it.

On the flipside however, if it is as hard with the mod, and I unlock it, would it then be unlocked in vanilla? As much as I want to do it uncheatingly, I don't want to have to do it twice.

It's actually much harder than vanilla because CE adds new events and sectors. Though, unlocking the Crystal Cruiser is nothing more than getting very lucky with the RNG so you're not missing out on much. Unlocking a new ship is saved in a part of the FTL files that isn't affected by mods at all, so there's no worries there, and if you're interested in cheating for the Cruiser like most of the rest of us you can use the FTL editor.

Thanks for that, that's good to know. I really didn't want to cheat the Cruiser into play...feels wrong somehow. Which is odd, because I have no problem using cheats to do things in other games, like skip levels in Doom 2, or unlock costumes in DMC3...
