Hey guys.
So, I've been playing a lot of roguelikes lately and I include FTL in that category. Love em.
FTL is great, and it's one of the best games I've played this year - certainly one of the best "indie" games as well.
Here's a couple of thoughts though given that the expansion isn't far off. I realise some of these have likely been suggested previously or been implemented in mods, but here goes.
1. There's a lot of a achievements, which is cool, and the ship ones reward you by unlocking the b variants.
However what I like about a lot of roguelikes is that you can unlock benefits or more different starting loadouts after time spent. So, if it were up to me, completing all the achievements for any ship class would allow you to switch a crew member in any starting ship to a crew member of that species - e.g, get all slugship achievements and you can switch a starting crewmember for a slug.
You'd have to come up with something slightly different for the stealthship and the federation cruiser, but anyway.
Once all ship achievements had been completed you get a bonus starting crewmember in all ships and you pick the species.
2. Similar mechanic for the "general" achievements.
Group them and if you complete all 4 achievements in Group A, all your ships start with an extra augmentation slot.
Group B - extra 2 starting power (without changing the cost progression)
Group C - start with extra 10 scrap, 5 missiles and 5 drone parts
Group D - random drone schematic and extra 7 fuel
Group E - random weapon and larger cargo bay (2 extra slots)
Group F - random extra crew member and +2 crew capacity
Group G - all crew members have level 1 skill across the board.
All achievements - start with a random augmentation, an extra augmentation slot and +1 to starting sensor level.
3. The ship unlocks involve a lot of chance, especially the crystal cruiser. Maybe tone that down a little bit. Took me ~25 hours to unlock the crystal cruiser WITH save scumming. I mean, seriously. How about just force the rock homeworlds to spawn in both spots in sector 7 if you have the crystal crewmember? Or generate a quest beacon in the next sector when you get the crewmember that will lead to homeworlds? Anyway..
So, if any of the devs see this - thanks for the excellent game, I'm looking forward to the expansion and hopefully a sequel with a bit of RTS/ star control 2 inspiration
cheers!
