You can kill the alien spiders without a melee alien. I had 3 or 4 humans or 3 humans and a non melee alien and sent them in. It told me that they had pushed them back and that the station gave me some scrap missiles and other stuff.
Good to know that those choices you make and go bad could go good on another play through.

Those alien spiders once ate my captain. luckily I just started game, so I restarted.

I've never seen them. It always just says my crew beat them back when I go to save the space station from them.

It's actually a 50%-50% chance. Also technically this will yield you more reward if you win.

Reward:

Anti-bio beam = Crew winning(50% chance) > Anti-personnel drone > Boarding drone

I've never beaten them, so I never try anymore. If it's actually 50/50 I'll start trying again.. hehe.

I beat them with a anti-personnel drone a couple times.
