Fire Beam Explanation

Can anyone come up with a reasonable explanation as to why fire beams work the way they do? I'm mainly curious, as is all. Obviously it's something to do with spontaneous combustion of air, but the only thing I can think of so fair is igniting traces of hydrogen gas inside a sealed compartment, and even then I don't know how you'd ignite it. Help me out, here?
EDIT: They don't need to be visible to the eye, in case you're wondering.

It uses a beam of pure Awesome. I believe a guitar lick may be involved. Right when the squeedlies turn into meedlies, the flame ignites out of simple universal appreciation.

Translation: It's a game, roll with it. Trying to over-analyze things will only leave you with a headache.
Like the oft-asked question "why don't my weapons charge while the enemy is cloaked?" it's just a game mechanic there for your enjoyment (if you're a pyromaniac, anyway). Declaring that squeeblies turn into meeblies is just as valid in this case as "it microwaves the air to an ignition point" or "because God said so." We can speculate all day about how a fire-beam might work, but in the end it's just another weapon in the arsenal to melt Rebel faces off.

Also, for context:

Squeedly and Meedly:

And because after watching those you'll want to see all of them:
