Hi

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed my first afternoon playing the game. Got to the final boss on my 4th or 5th go on normal but died in the 3rd stage (sorry if thats a spoiler) with him having only 2 blocks of hull left..should have fixed before I went in

Congratulations! This game can be pretty tough and it sounds like you (almost) had a pretty good run. I know some people who play FTL who are still trying to get their hands on the final boss and some of the tougher ship-achievements!

In time, you'll have a good feeling of how you are progressing through each run and whether you'll be strong enough to comfortably take on the boss ship (though, then again, you might fail to dodge all those shots while at max engines... but at least there is an achievement for that).
