Beat the ship, rebels advance?

I just had the weirdest encounter. I trashed the rebel ship and (sadly) didn't bother reading the text afterward, and now the rebel fleet is advancing on me twice as fast as they would normally, as if I had lost the battle and they got away.
Is there a very rare event that does this, or did I just find a bug? I've played hundreds of games and don't think I've ever seen this.

Only event I can think of like that is the 'hack into the station' one, that gives you a chance to delay or advance the rebel fleet, but it requires a choice/extra click, so you'd know if you'd done that. Never seen the fleet advance faster without a reason either, so sorry, no answer!

Of course it was when I wasn't recording so I couldn't go back and pause it.
Oh well maybe I'll get "lucky" again in the future and see it.

I came across the event again but this time I was paying attention.
It's one of the "rebel defector" fights. If you accept his proposal, he could damage your ship and teleport away with your flight data, causing the rebels to advance no matter what happens in the battle.
