Slug Type A Strategy

The slug type a has a very powerful starting setup for getting more scrap. The dual lasers will destroy the shields easily in the first 3 sectors and to maximize scrap just target the shields with the dual lasers and then anti bio beam them. you want 2 shield by the 3rd sector and want to max them first and then max weapons power and engines. You will also want to fully upgrade the doors so you can just suffocate boarders. you also want to pick up as many crew members as you can. By sector 5 you should try to have 3 laser weapons and one powerful missile (a Hermes or a breach). By sector or 6 you wont need the anti bio beam. If there is a scrap arm always buy it. Always have enough power for all systems fully powered. If you have a scrap arm then you should buy a repair arm so you want have to waste scrap on repairs at the store. If you get full shield and engine and Decent Weapons and have 2 star crew members on every system than you should be set.

The repair arm actually begins costing more scrap than you earn (even considering a scrap recovery arm) a few sectors into the game.

Yes but over all it is only a 5% decrease in scrap intake and in return you auto repair so you can spend your scrap on crew or weapons at the store

early game repairs cost 2 scrap per point, mid game repairs cost 3, and late game repairs cost 4.

The repair arm repairs 1 point per scrap collection, and subtracts 15% from your scrap earned, and thus... In order for it to be profitable, you must be collecting less than 14 scrap per collection early game, less than 21 scrap per collection mid game, and less than 28 scrap per collection late game.

So pretty much, it's only good for the first few beacons, and even then you're concentrating your precious early scrap on needed upgrades. yes, it may seem good at first glance, but the costs actually end up outweighing the benefits very quickly.

Well, different strokes for different folks and if you like it/find it useful and worth the investment, go for it. You probably will find though that the most common attitude is that it isn't worth it. I would find it hard to argue with the maths that IConquer posted.

Myself, I'll put the scrap towards engines/shields and cloak &/or defence drone, so that I can mitigate as much incoming damage as possible. I then tend to only repair if I'm below 50% hull (or even only once I'm in the red, if I'm feeling bold) and when I do need to repair in those situations, I'll only repair up to about 20HP. This allows me to take advantage of any events where folks give free/cheap repairs, rather than let those events go to waste. Of course you get a free repair of 10HP or so for reaching the Last Stand so I'm comfortable running most of the game at 50/60% hull. Repair Arm just doesn't fit into that playstyle and costs me too much scrap.

What is lovely though is stumbling across a Hull Repair drone and a drone recovery arm. Preferably only paying for one if not getting both free. That's then 2 free HP each jump.

I find repair arm to be a waste of scrap. Best is still drone recovery + repair drone. I've completed all ships on normal and have never bought repair arm before
