Suggestion - Crew equipment

So we have multiple space-faring races and they don't know how to strap some oxygen to their backs? Perhaps I'd like my Engi to put on a flame retardant suit. Or what if I want my Mantis to wear some armour? Vote for crew equipment! It's scientifically proven to make games better if you can specialise your crew members by giving them shiny gear.

Strapping some oxygen to their backs would pretty much render oxygen useless in this game.
Same with fireproof suits. Kills the whole point.

I really like the idea, but if this gets done by a mod (or even the game itself) it you be balanced REALLY well. It is very easy to make a certain combination of gear/race that would make them OP. Just think of two rock crew with oxygen on their back, fires and oxygen loss would become no problem whatsoever.
How rare would these be and how much would these effect gameplay, and would the enemy be able to wear them, can you buy them at shops or do you only get them at random events. (and little things like: a mantis shouldn't be able to hold a weapon because of the whole lack of hands thing).
All of that said, it does sound like something that would make the whole game a lot more awesome and diverse. great idea and I'd say: Modders, go for it!

Well, it shouldn't be oxygenless or fireproof indefinitely, it should have either a reduced effect: Less damage (like 50%) or it should only last for a set amount of time (An oxygen bottle should run empty at some point).
That would be one way to balance it...

Like Milkshake says, it would need to be balanced. Perhaps the oxygen lasts only 8 seconds and makes you take 2x fire damage. Perhaps the fireproof suits reduce fire damage but slows movement speed. I think it would expand the gameplay a fair bit.

Too much is hardcoded.
We have problems even trying to add new races or augmentations, this is definitely out of our hands.

For this reason the most exciting mod in development is FTL: Overdrive. Basically it's a re-code of the entire game to allow for easier mod building. It's even got the developers backing it.
Progress is really slow but it looks like a few people are still working on it. I bet it'll happen- just not soon
Sparing a big update though, if this mod doesn't happen we're probably never going to see crew equipment. I read an interview that FTL 2 won't be the devs next project so it's likely that all mods for this game will be variations of the ones we see now. Which is fine because the game is really great.
Personally I'm looking forward to Star Command, which is being developed with mods in mind to scratch the itch of a game that keeps on growing. FTL is a perfect little game so maybe that's all it's meant to be.

That's too bad. Have the devs said they won't be adding any more features to FTL?

They have not said that. They have also released several updates that contain bugfixes and new features.

So why are people talking about this like there's no chance of devs implementing new stuff? I sorta got the impression that things are moving upwards and onwards barring what modders can do.
