Re: I don't get it
I want to add the same thing nfiae said about Yahtzee, there is lots of skill involved, knowing what dice to reroll, where to put them in etc. Just because noobs like my grandpa dont know that, doesnt make it random!

Lol, okay. Not really anything to do with what I'm talking about, but I'll go ahead and agree and retract the single sentence I said about Yahtzee

I think Nethack is a really bad comparison.
Those automatic deaths can almost always be helped, the only thing is that you decided to gamble and try to get away with it. Just like people who play minesweeper and try to gamble half the time.
* Traps can be found by searching. Dying from poisoning is incredibly rare before you get a fair chance to get poison resistance.
* Rockfall trap can usually be identified by seeing rocks on the ground. Don't walk over them. Also, Iron Skull Cap is probably one of the most common items in the game, try wearing one? It doesn't affect cast success rate by more than a couple %'s.
I agree with OP. I've really tried my best to learn this game without checking any spoiler websites, but this is getting quite ridiculous..

You make it sound like a perfect comparison.

Then your best is not good enough. The game is easy even on normal, I won my third playthrough and rarely lose now with most ships, I'm not superman. Learn to play better, then luck won't be necessary anymore. You did it with Nethack, so you are obviously capable if you would stop blaming luck and start minimizing bad decisions.

Perhaps I misunderstood something because you lost me.I defend Nethack anyway, love that game.
Ascended 6 times total (2x Wiz, 2x Tour, 2x Valk)

Fair enough man I haven't given up yet. I'm a little slow as I'm not using spoilers (and I'm no genious either), but my current impression of this game is that the point of feeling I learned something by dying is starting to diminish.

I assume he was saying that if you're smart enough to ascend in Nethack, you should be smart enough to (eventually) learn enough about this game to mitigate a vast majority of the randomness.
If you're attempting to avoid all spoilers, then I'll definitely grant you that this game will seem to be far more randomly punishing than those of us who dive into spoiler territory headfirst. (To be fair, I can't even imagine attempting to play Nethack without spoilers, and I've ascended thrice.) And really, once you've tapped into spoilers, there's no way to go back to being unspoiled, so I can see how that might need to be tweaked.
That is, because events just have a choice and an outcome, if your choice is between "risk something that I've seen a bad event from, and run away", this doesn't match up with the discovery method in other Roguelikes, where you either have alternate identification methods and can "hold off" on risking something here and now (ie do I drink this un-ID'd potion now, or carry it with me for later), or are monster encounters that you can run away from and/or overcome with experience (gaining new blue-choices is kinda like the latter, but in practice, it still feels like you're choosing either to drink or not to drink that un-ID'd potion, or to equip/not equip this new un-ID'd armor/weapon, which might be cursed).
The "learning from your death" in this game seems to more be a cross between "finding out the possible different outcomes of event X, and then deciding whether it's worth the risk or not" and "playing a lot of ship battles to learn how the various weapons/systems/etc can all work together".

The events can set you back a little, but thats not what I meant. I did not know them either. More important is allocating upgrades, saving scrap for stores and what to do in fights. If you are a nethack master, you should find this very easy soon enough.

The special event deaths, or rather losing crew and hull to special events seems to be largely a "learn by getting screwed by them enough times" kind of thing. Only thing I can say is always pick the blue

Ship combat deaths on the other hand, I almost always learn something from... even if its only to learn to laugh as your house burns down around you.
I'm not all that good, I'll admit it but like you I'm avoiding as many spoilers as I can. I have picked up on a few general strategies that do work. The big one seems to be hoard your wealth early in the game; you never know when a store will pop up with that ONE upgrade you oh so desparately need and I cannot count the times I've shown up having squandered my wealth on ship upgrades, had to pass it by, and then been bitten firmly in the cheeks one sector later for having not had it. I try to alway bank around 100 scrap just for those moments and resist the urge to buy one more level of shielding and upgrades to the reactor).
The other is to always visit as many nodes in the early sector as possible. I always try to be jumping out of the exit point just in front of the rebel fleet.
...and for god's sake, DO NOT RUN OUT OF FUEL IN FRONT OF THE REBEL FLEET. Do NOT. NO. Don't do it. You have lost, the destruction of your ship is a formality that may happen ten jumps down the line. Although, I gotta admit it was amusing just to sit back and watch all of the weird random enounters the game throws at you while I sat stranded in a nebula.

JUST STFU! YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT CARD GAMES; YOU SHOULDN'T EVEN PLAY VIDEO GAMES.
I think you missed the opportunity for multiple exclamation points. You're wrong about poker. I have a better chance at winning than you do. Good use of the spell checker though.
