I maxed all systems in my "Living of the land" game. It obviously didnt have teleport, cloaking nor drones, but i maxed everything else, from sensors to the artillery beam, including O2 and healing bay, and wound up with 70 scrap, and that was in a run without any boarding whatsoever, in normal difficulty. So its perfectly possible to get lots of scrap for maxing a lot of systems. My personal best is 2218.
Thank you, someone else who knows their stuff. Power juggling saves a ton, specially when cloak is available. All power from drones as you cloak for example, medbay only needs powered when in use, shields are EMP'd constantly so it's good not to have that power idle. 2218 without boarding is nuts. On this Mantis run I did 2500 boarding every single ship.
Yeah that Mantis B is unmodded blah blah. If you can think of something I can post to prove it I'd be happy. Attached stats screen on the off chance that will do. I did about 122 jumps going back into rebel nodes to see if you could "farm points" that way, turns out you can, so the run was worth nearly 6,000.

You should try out the Mantis B. Starts with teleporter, so that's something like 50% better scrap for the entire game. It also gets that crucial Defense I drone from the start so you don't ever really need to repair.

Yeah, for scrap my personal best is 2496, I don't think that's using boarders - since 3 of my top 5 scores is with the Stealth-B and I never use boarders with that ship. I think that's more to do with the awesomeness of long-range scanners and how max stealth with decent engines allows you to run from rebels from very early on so you can hit more beacons without worrying about them taking the exit.

Scrap is easy to come by and you don't even need all that much to get good gear for a ship. You need much more luck getting good (or specific) weapons from stores and events though. I don't really see why all of the screenshots on first page couldn't be from normal-unmodded game.

In my best run, I think I had 10 shots from several burst and hull lasers combined. Life was easy, I was crippling the flagship systems in one volley.

Ion Blast 1, Ion Blast 2, Heavy Ion and Ion Bomb (and one Beam Drone). I got level 3 sensors just so I could see all the beautiful ion lockdown timers.

Definitely it was Halbert Beam+ Halbert Beam + ion bomb + ion bomb
ion bombs on shields = no shields and 2 beams worth 8 damage each
Other good setup was with Glaive beam + 2x ion bombs
Also my best scrap related run was with teleporting + 3x scrap recovery arms

Hell of a slugger. One of the hardest "perfect" setups to get imo with the flip side that it has the least technical technique to play.
Run completed in Normal, no mods, score of 6225 and in one continuous run while waiting in YYZ.
@peke: Yes and no, there is something to be said for being able to roll with whatever terrible setup RNG deems you worthy of. Though when you get a perfect run....ah damn but it's good.
