i'm not saying I want the game to be easy

I want the random elements to change the gameplay

chance making the game different every time is great

so much about this game is great and some minor tweaks to some %age points would make it AMAZING
Chance doesn't make the game impossible all that often, though. All it does is make you use different strategies. I can make the boss several times. If anything, this game is slightly too easy. I know I've gotten closer to beating it on normal than ever beating ADoM, Brogue, ToME, or Nethack. And I manage to survive for longer than I usually do in adventurer mode in Dwarf Fortress. (And just be happy this game doesn't have that game's damage system. The spinning piece of shrapnel strikes your pilot in the head, breaking the skull and tearing the brain! Your pilot has been struck down!")

NO!
THIS SHOULD NOT BE ACCPETED BY THE MARKETPLACE; IT MAKES 0 SENSE FOR GAMES OUTSIDE OF THE ARCADE BECAUSE THERE IS NO QUARTER SLOT

you can keep pretending that i'm talking about stifling your creativity, but we all know what the truth is; I'm right and you are wrong.
you want to go back to an element that is annoying and was ONLY MADE TO TAKE MORE MONEY FROM THE GAMER

Lets do this, you get some dental work done in an obsolete style and I'll admit that a game should use luck requirements to force players to restart
If you rely on luck, you're doing it wrong. Granted I've only beaten the game on Easy, (come pretty close on Normal a few times), but if you're not getting one thing, you just have to work with another. You'll pretty much always have access to cloaking and transporters. So long as you can find a missile or bomb to take out any med bay you can succeed with boarders pretty well. Cloaking can help you to avoid major attacks that would take your shields out. You can always increase the systems you start out with. Maybe you should try some different strategies? There's a whole forum of them here. And here's a quick tip: Pause the game, plan your attacks, fire in volleys of multiple weapons, and don't just click on auto-fire. Oh, and a bonus tip: Ad hominem doesn't make people take you seriously, it shows a lack of actual points to make, plus you get better mileage out of calling people idiots when they're the ones who can't spell or use grammar. "serisuly"

You know what "serisuly" means because your brain only reads the first 3 letters and the last 2(I can show you studies that show this)
[my typos don't effect your understanding and allow me to type rapidly without editing]

I call the people idiots because they claim i am wrong and they are right becasue they say so; this is how i respond to people like this. It works and I recomend it.

I've beaten the game on easy and normal; and I've also died several times when unlucky events occur over and over.

BTW: your tips are solid and yet you can't beat normal. That's kinda strange right?

Now that's more like it! Some insults and telling me I'm wrong and you're right.... perfect. I don't even need to respond, everytime you post you're reinforcing my point. Your attitude toward gaming is preciscely what I'm talking about.
I'm saying that a game that kills you with random events on MOST playthroughs is broken

and you being too stupid to figure that out makes me think that your idea that success in a game should be more about luck than skill is stupid too

There are no random events that kill you. They can damage you or kill a crew man, but if you're stupid enough to not take the "leave well alone" option when your hull is low or you're down to one crew, then I feel that this game is beyond you. Try something with well endowed female elves in instead! The market is awash with them.

See you guys don't even get it

I'm not talking about a single random even that kills you

I'm talking about the overall difficulty of each playthrough is completely different and not only that, but a few different things in a row can ruin a great run.

and as for a single event that can kill you

you could fight a ship with a beam drone as your first battle with the stealth ship and be destroyed before you can jump or get 1 shot off.

So yeah

I've read those studies, too. However, when all I have to judge people on is how well they spell, the person who spells incorrectly will always be judged to have a lower intelligence. I type perfectly fine quickly. Mainly because I learned to type on the really old Sierra adventure games, where the game didn't pause when you typed, everything had to spelled correctly, and the games loved killing you more than FTL.

"I call the people idiots because they claim i am wrong and they are right becasue they say so; this is how i respond to people like this. It works and I recomend it." It doesn't work, it makes people like me crawl out of the woodwork and link to pages like http://yourlogicalfallacyis.com/ad-hominem. It doesn't change minds. I think of it as the kindergarten attack, because it boils down to "You're wrong because you're stinky!" as opposed to "You're wrong, and this is why: *reasons*." See the difference?

Its not strange that I can't beat normal. I don't have the vast reserve of patience for long pauses, although I'm better than I used to be. I also tend to get excited and take unneeded risks hoping for a better payoff. I'm trying to curb that also. It seems to work, I usually make it further each time I play. However, the draw is the fact that the game is so hard. If it were easy, I wouldn't have to improve my gameplay to succeed.

I think the point you are trying to make is that you don't like the game throwing random challenges at you and that you find it difficult to adapt to situations. If you don't like that, then go play something that doesn't have those features, pretty simple. Yes I've already aknowledged that the game can be cruel every now and then and my heart bleeds for all the tears you've spent. You make out as though it's impossible to win, far from it. I can pretty much get up to the flagship everytime now probably 80-90% of the time, beaten it twice with the Kestrel and with the Torus. I actually found it more difficult with the Torus, but that's probably because I had to adapt to the different style of ship. Think I might go for the stealth ship next, I'll let you know if I encounter that cloaked beam drone and rage quit...... don't hold your breath though ;)

I like that the devs don't get overly involved in the forums here... But "seriously", we could have stopped at
{serisuly I think you are a dick and an idiot}

Everything after that (either by the Troll or by the people feeding the troll) is a waste.

Moderators: Please - just suspend the Troll, delete the later posts, and lock the thread.

Everyone else - please don't feed the Troll. He/She has proven their lack of intelligence/immaturity. Nothing you say will change their mind; do not waste your time or energy (or embolden this person to do this on other threads).

Thank you.

I quite like him, feeding him makes my point more valid :p
