Regarding Stealth C
I noticed that the shield drones charge time depends on how much super shield layers you have.
If you have none you get 5 seconds charge time and then maybe 2 or 2.5 seconds per layer in addition to the 5. Additionally you can still buy shield and then get two independent shield systems. I dont know what happens if you activate 2 shield drones but it could be pretty effective aswell if you have the drone parts. I have to try this. I dont think that the Stealth C is that bad, because it has lots of upgrade possibilities (2 independent shield systems).
On the other hand: is a shield+ better than a defense drone mark 2?

I don't think that it works that way, it just looks like it takes longer.
Sort of like how the enemy will always target your Clone Bay with an ion bomb or 3+ damage missile just when you're about to use it. Or they'll ion bomb Life Support after you've vented your ship. It's just a matter of perception.
I think Defense Drone Mk.II is better. Shields take about 8 seconds to fire and only block one projectile (most likely a laser and not missiles) while Mk.II Defense Drones block everything quicker (most likely a laser and not missiles)

True, but if you fiddle with the charge times a bit, you can pretty much decide which shot will be blocked by the Shield Drone, unless they synch up of course. It still should allow you to take out the heavier missiles, though.
Granted, the Stealth C with a 2-power Def. Drone II would be an entirely different animal.
Regardless of its difficulty, I still think it's a fun ship because a) I like all the shieldless ships, and b) it's got great starting weapons.
My personal ranking of the C's is not so much focussed on actual performance, but rather on the *feel* of the ships:
1. Slug C. MC and Hacking allow you to mess with opponents in hilarious ways.
2. Zoltan C. Unique strengths and weaknessess. Late-game monster.
3. Stealth C. See above.
4. Engi C. Dual Lasers, Hacking and Lanius make the ship incredibly versatile. Switch Beam Drone for Fire Drone if possible.
5. Rock C. Because I always wanted a triple launcher. Pick up a Pegasus and Explosive replicator for added fun.
6. Fed C. Yeah, Zoltan-bombing is pretty fun. But I'd love to be able to sell the stupid artillery.
7. Mantis C. Feels like a discount combination of Slug and Mantis B. But still more interesting than...
8. Kestrel C. Yeah, it's pretty boring.
