Note to self: Don't tab out unless the oxygen is green. And keep in mind that the O² system does NOT auto-repower when being repaired (unlike shields).
Go to the options menu, select the "Windows Focus Auto-Pause" feature or something like that. Automatically pauses whenever you tab out of FTL.
It's possible to turn it OFF? I always always had it on,evenin vanilla, was a gripe of mine actualyl because whenever I was against an easy ship that couldn't penetrate my shield the munchkin in me kept saying "stay and level up your crew on helm/engine/shield alllll the way" but was always bored after a tiny bit because I cuoldn't tab out without the game pausing :(

Anyway.

rock cruiser B on hard, at 1 hp looking for a store like a madman, jump to an event beacon, it's that one about the deserter rebel guy who may or may not join you, instead of killing him on the spot I go my usual "well maybe h'ell join me for real" BAM he sabotage, and gooodbye ship

Tough battle against the Flagship - I don't have a good boarding crew, but decide to try to kill off the Flagship's crew (with the usual exception) anyway to make the next phases easier. It's not easy, demands risk and precision, but I manage to pull it off, destroy the shields and helm, and fire my shots. The Flagship is down to two Hull, my lasers are incoming. Great - it's done. Jump away to fight the next phase. Yes. Jump away. Before the lasers actually hit. In case you were wondering, yes - not only is the Flagship back at full health, so are its crew. Achievement Unlocked - Too Stupid to Play This, or any, Game!

Neat trick I've found with it turned on...

Alt-tab out during a jump, and if you end up in combat on the other side, the fight starts already paused. If the enemy has a cloak, you can set up your first volley before they disappear. Pre-Igniter + Beam, anyone?

This happened to me thrice today. Came here to post it.

Ergo: Misery loves company.

That sounds like an exploit that should be reported as a bug :)

You can occasionally do this with just the pause button. I'm not sure what the situations are, but I've been able to teleport guys into the Flagship in the first phase before the first cloak. I was probably mashing on the pause button like a madman would be my guess.

It's possible to do it by hitting pause at the right time, but it's easier to alt-tab out with the auto-pause on.

I'm fairly sure all you have to do is hit the spacebar while the event text is showing, and the game will pause immediately after the final dialogue box goes away.

If this is the case then I'll consider it a strategy, and a very welcome one. And the Flagship will never missile me again on Normal mode.

EDIT: I tried it and it works! It even darkens the screen behind you so you can tell if it's paused or not.

So I was playing the Mantis B one day, I got to sector 7 with it and I have a full boarding crew...

...full of Engis.

Next beacon there is an Auto-drone. I decide "Durrrr I'm gonna board it."

Pegasus takes out shields, beams takes out the two engis in my ship, and the other four suffocate because the Hermes missile took out my teleporter. gg FTL, and Fuck you brain.
