You have to beat the game in Advanced Edition mode with either the B type, or both the A and B types (I can't recall which). You can beat it on Easy mode, just has to have AE enabled.

That is not actually true. You can dodge them (I think as likely as dodging anything else), cloak through them, have high engines to escape before they fire, and - the easiest way - not fight the rebels. Except in Nebulas. This is actually a good reason to go into Nebulas
Elhazzared wrote:it just randomly hits and hits hard, not to mention it only goes after you.
Only in Rebel Fleet events. Sometimes you'll come across batteries that shoot at the enemies. It's glorious.
Elhazzared wrote:I am on two minds about the flak cannon. While I love the weapon and the concept I feel the weapon is terribly overpowered. The cooldown is relatively short, the damage caused by it (especially to shields) is massive, it doesn't even uses up ammunition (though all things considered it makes sense not to use any).
We actually had a discussion in the Beta tester group about the Flak. Most thought the Flak 2 was too OP. I thought the Flak 1 was better than the Flak 2 but didn't think either were OP. The Devs in the end decided they liked it like it was (obviously, as that's what we have).

Oops. I was wrong on that one

Thanks for correcting me.

It's going to be a long time before I play an actual game of this because I need to fix all of my mods so they will be ready for when people leave the vanilla AE. When I do get that far, I'm going to delete my profile and play hard mode, like so many other people.
One thing I have noticed, from watching videos and doing testing, is that the rebel fleet shows up sooner. Two jumps, then you see them. It used to be like 3 to 4 jumps before they showed up on the left side. While the map display is bigger, I'm pretty sure the actual sectors are still the same size.
The Abandoned Sector seems to show up a lot, but I'm pretty sure it has just as much chance as any other hostile sector.

I find it amusing you guys say normal got easier. I started off to get the C variants of a couple ships and got extremely lucky and though it had gotten easier I played an Engi B to start and seemed to have a good time of it, and I was really happy when I saw a clone bay and DNA backup at the same shop. kestrel ended up with a Flak II early on and a chain laser, and absolutely wrecked since that's 5 chances for a shield hit.
Neither ship made it past the boss' 1st phase since hacking screwed me pretty well.
I really dig the new weapons especially the charge weapons since it helps me mass fire to break shields on targets with lots of bubbles and high evade, chain is not so hot.
New systems are great as well, and I find it hard to decide if I like the medbay or clone bay more.
All in all it's very refreshing. I'm not the best FTL player so it did get a little annoying after a while and some new stuff helps a bit with that since I have more angles to approach the problem.
Engi B still sucks though.

I agree, I found that normal got a little harder and hard is nearly impossible. The big problem is there is more stuff, so you're more likely to not find something you want/need. Even with a 2nd page in the store.
That's by no means a complaint. I don't *want* to win 90% of my attempts. More dramatic if failure is waiting around every corner.

Honestly, I often didn't feel like I found what I wanted in the original version either.

Wow, the hacking can really screw you.
I was playing an ion strategy with the Engi A and I'm now locked in an unwinable stalemate with the boss. He hacked my weapons bay and the combination of the hack and his cloak stops me from getting enough ion on his shield to bring it down for my beams. And it's the final jump, if I jump out I lose.
I think Normal is now definitely harder. Mainly due to better enemies with better offensive, and things like defence drones not being able to stop all missiles or drones anymore.

I guess we'll need 3-page stores, then!
