Re: Future Sandbox mode?

I was going to start a new thread, but then found this.
What this game need is to make it like Elite. The game mechanics are awesome, and can still be built on, but the scenario is somewhat limiting.
I dont think this is a patch, mind. Perhaps an idea for FTL2.
To start of, you should have a small ship and crew, but add in a cargo bay and trading element. Then you can figt or trade your way to bigger ships. Have a large galaxy map, perhaps showing the ongoing battle between the Fedaration and Rebels, but allow you to pick which side you do missions for.
Make the ships themselves have room for more systems, which are mannable, for example each gun has a seperate gunner. And maybe have you in the game as the captain, providing a boost to the crew while you sit in the captain chair.
Make armour and shield upgradable, and allow more room for energy banks, larger teleport pads.
I guess the list of potential improvements is endless, although as I said, not really doable in a patch. What I am talking about would require far greater resources to achieve. But FTL was popular. The Kickstarter showed that there is a massive demand for this type of game. And I only heard about it a couple of months ago, so there is bound to be many more people who this would appeal to who perhaps have not heard of it.
What has got me stoked is the endless potential that the ship mechanics bring, and with nothing similar on the market. I would call the concept totally original, if it wasnt for a little game called PSI Trading Company on my old Commadore 64. Anyone remember that? I have been waiting a long time for a spaceship strategy game, and FTL has not disappointed.
