This sounds like the perfect example of how co-op would work. Sacrificing the ability to pause and calculate your moves beforehand in exchange for an extra pair of hands connected to a (somewhat) intelligent mind. :P

coop with 2 ships, sensors showing u ur friendly ship and crew (and loosing the view of friendly ship when sensors are down. being able to "board" ur team mates ship to help out if there crew is being over whelmed. Formations eg side by side or one infront` of the other to protect it/ give it time to repair. Built in voip would be `a huge plus too.

And you can shout and blame each other for your mistakes! I'd totally watch a coop streaming if there's bickering going on.

One thing that caught the attention of me to this game (I discovered it only a week before the release date) was how alike it was a game that I had played before, namely Space Station 13. Nownow, SS13 is a huge multiplayer role-playing game, where a crew of ten to forty people walk around in a slightly similar sense as FTL, with tasts and jobs that they need to hold.

There is no sort of fighting between other ships, and the station that SS13 is based on is HUGE, so there's a lot of differences.

But one thing that I immediately thought when I saw this was if each little character was their own player. Or in some way that every (initial) crewmemeber was played by a different person, while if a new one got onto the ship with an event would be controlled by some sort of AI while the captain were able to give orders, and if a player-controlled guy died, he would simply take control over an AI.

This of course would be a huge project, and might not be implemented even far into the future (Although they do have the funding...), but it would be kind of cool if a bunch of guys sat over voicechat, saying things like "Oh crap, fire in the engine room! STEVE! Fix it while Joseph takes control over the weapons!" (Of course, Steve failed this fairly hard task and died, his ashes spreading themselves all over the interior of the ship and giving the rest of the guys cancer. Space cancer. (Never trust Steve)).
I always have this great idea to post about when reading a thread, but I always seem to loose the subject while writing a reply, and end up not saying anything at all. I should sleep more. Is that a cookie?

I seems to me that one option for co-op would be to have one player control the ships systems, weapons and power, while the other player would control the crew. This would lead to co-operation and communication between the two players, which is what makes a good co-op game.

For example:
"I think we should board them now, send some guys to the teleport room."
"Okay, I'll send the mantises, put them down in the engine room."

or

"I need the weapons back up, send someone to fix them."
"Give me a second, the shields are almost repaired and we'll take a beating from those beams without them."

Nope.

Doesn't fit the gameplay, massive extra workload for the devs for questionable gains(at best).

Seems to me like it could only detract from a control aspect, and will cause massive arguments, and internal conflict, and open up for massive trolling/griefing in public co-op, and in the end be abandoned by pretty much everyone but the trolls because it'd be such a nightmare. Really this game does not lend itself well to co-op.

The idea of putting multiple people into the same ship is entirely valid. Exspecially if you 'balance' it by removing the pause option ^^

I would even go as far and dream off a FTL version where crew members are linked to specific players (usually 1 crew per player, unless there are not enough players) and players can only influence the ship systems of the room their assigned crewman are in. Could lead to some interesting RPG and hilarious "Wtf did you aim at their empty rooms for"-like stuff.

All just a dream though, I honestly doubt the devs are going to update the game in any way ^^' But hey, maybe somebody managed to crack into the exe and retrieve the sourcecode :3

Co-Op between multiple players working with multiple lighter craft than our usual Cruisers would be interesting. IE, four Federation Fighters/Bombers/Scouts. Between them all they'd have all the system potential, but no one ship would have everything. So one of them might have a four-square teleporter and medbay and be light on the weapons systems, and it would be his job to micromanage the boarding efforts and teleport in the other ships' crews for healing when needed - or drop healing bursts on his fellow ships. One could have ions out of the wazoo, another has heavy guns, etcetera.

Co-op would be an interesting feature, but I would prefer an endless mode over co-op. As in, you level up your ship and the enemies get progressively harder. Maybe every ten sectors or so you would encounter a boss. When you pressed the Next Sector button you wouldn't get a map but just teleport to another sector.

Just my thoughts.
