Returning with a broken transporter

Post by The Enemy »

First of all, I am crazy about this game, so not really complaining about a missing feature, just thinking out loud about how it would be cool. (I've never attempted to play any mods, so maybe somebody has already done something similar...)

If you kill the enemy crew with your entire crew on their ship, and your transporter has been broken during the fight, the game handwaves away the problem by giving you a message along the lines of "With your transporter out of commission, you take a shuttlecraft back to your ship." In other words, there's no penalty to you for getting in this situation.

I was thinking: what if there was a chance to fail at this that could be mitigated somewhat by race and piloting attributes?

For example, if you have a crew member of the same race as the ship you've boarded, you get a message of "Your transporter is destroyed, leaving you unable to beam back, but your Mantis [or whatever] crewmember has no problem with the alien ship's shuttlecraft controls and navigates you back to your ship."

If you have a crew member with 1 or 2 stars in piloting, you get a message of "Your transporter is destroyed, leaving you unable to beam back, but your piloting skills are enough to puzzle out the alien ship's shuttlecraft controls and you fly back to your ship."

If you have neither...

60 percent: "Your transporter is destroyed, leaving you unable to beam back, but you get lucky guessing at the alien ship's shuttlecraft controls and manage to make it back to your ship in one piece."

20 percent: "Your transporter is destroyed, leaving you unable to beam back. You take one of the alien ship's shuttlecraft, but you're confused by the controls and do some damage to your ship while trying to dock." (-5 hull)

20 percent: "Your transporter is destroyed, leaving you unable to beam back. You take one of the alien ship's shuttlecraft, but you're baffled by the controls and make a terrible error while trying to dock. One of your crewmembers is sucked out into the unforgiving void of space while you watch helplessly..." (lose random crewmember)

I think this could be kind of interesting and provide an incentive to think about your boarding strategy a bit more. Any opinions?

I think that is possible with a mod. There is an event defined as "event_stuck" but my limited modding knowledge doesn't tell me if you could expand it to have a bunch of possibilities.

I like the idea though. Anything that makes boarding less of an instant win :D

Partly possible - to my knowledge there's no way to read crew proficiencies, so making anything dependent on the skill of a crew member is out of the question. The event that shuttles you back could definitely be tweaked to allow for alternate outcomes however.
(I foresee many circumstances of piloting back to your ship, wrecking the shuttle, and accidentally destroying your Cruiser with -5 hull damage... "Captain, we're home! Yay!" */KABOOM*)
