"Oh you gotta be FUCKING KIDDING ME!" Jake shouted, his smile fading. "What are the odds?"
"Well... kinda high I guess... The ionic energy must've drawn in the ionic gasses, and you were the closest thing to the main source... so..." Sarah said.
"Sarah.... Shut up! I guess we're going back in time now... right?" Jake moaned.
"Think again. The energy re-absorbed isn't nearly enough to send us back in time. Electrical degradation. But it's still enough to fry the Temporal Drive from trying to jump without enough voltage! And it'll take the entire Main Reactor along with it!"
"We need another way to divert the ener-"
"There's no time! The main reactor is going to depolarize any second!"
"Sarah! Shut down your program, immediately!"
"But Jake..."
"When the reactor goes offline, the computer will immediately shut down. I don't want to risk damage to your program. SHUT DOWN!"
Without even seeing her, Sarah's voice faded away into oblivion. A few seconds later, there was the loud crackle of an electrical charge cascading through the ship. Every single screen in the cockpit went black. Jake sat in pitch blackness, the only light from the window which shone through the fog dimly. As the minutes passed by, Jake felt the cold seep in. His breath became clouded. The radio was dead, but they were far from the battle. Nothing he could do but sit in the back-lines of the fight, adrift through the slowly diminishing fog. Sitting adrift in silence, Jake had nothing but his own thoughts to stimulate him
It wasn't that the reactor was destroyed - worse. The main Fusion Inducers were probably depolarized, meaning they would need to be repolarized. Tech to repolarize Inducers was very expensive and hard to come by. The Mature was too valuable an asset for the URU to give up, meaning that he could probably have the Pelican and Scarab take turns towing the lifeless husk until they found a procured some repolarization tech. That is, if the Mature's crew didn't freeze to death and the rest of the fleet wasn't blown to bits by Slugs.
