this was the first time i had EVER gotten the crystal crew. and I came across the evil giant spider event so I was an idiot and said I should help them. but someone died the crystal

Never trust giant alien spiders.
Honestly, that's one question you should bail on without question unless you have a blue option (Like with the Anti-Bio Beam, for instance)

That's not strictly true. When I have more than 4 people on a non-teleporting ship, I frequently toss one at every potentially-person-killing option out there. But if you care about ANY of your crew specifically, you should always avoid these.

I tend to care about:
Mantises/rocks/crystals on a teleporting ship.
Zoltans
My one Engi. If there are 2, go for it.
