Even with max cloak it's RNG hell as fuck.
Drones still fuck you (especially the beam kind) now you can avoid beam weapon yeah but with a shield you can do it too actually. And yeah with 1 engin power you still can get hit even cloaked, and if weapon are hit, you're out, even with max cloak.

I actually find this ship fun to play, in a masochistic kind of way. Yeah it can be frustrating, but that's because it is SUPER specialized. Focus on dealing with its weaknesses:

-Stealth doesn't last long enough for beam to charge up.
-Crappy evade unlike stealth A
-No titanium plating, so a single hit to weapons means that 17 sec charge goes out the window.
-Autoships with beam drone+ minibeam make you want to throw your computer of a cliff.

My first priority is getting level 3 cloak. Early on, when firing at enemies always have the beam start in their shield room. This often disables the shields and the next rooms hit will take the full 3 damage. Many ship configs like Rebel Rigger can be taken out in a single shot.

I also spend the next 50 scrap upgrading weapons a tick. This lessens the likelihood glaive will get knocked out in 1 hit and opens up the potential to get weapons that complement glaive well (ion blast, small bomb, etc).

Shields are important but often that 120 scrap can go toward other useful things. With a starting weapon like Glaive beam I like getting preigniter asap over shields. It's a great way to counter those pimped out but unshielded autoscouts you'll encounter thorough the entire game

Frankly with a Glaive Beam and a Level 3 Cloak, you shouldn't need the Shield. I've seen people do Stealth Cruiser runs before entirely without shields, and I believe it's possible with some nice Drones. Two Defense II's should be enough to negate any significant damage while cloak is down.

Beams really are your biggest enemy. Especially beam drones. Especially high-level beam drones. Especially high-level beam drones against a ship with Ion/Beam weaponry.

Edit: First battle of my first run after getting home from school today. Both beacons next to the start were ships, one was an Asteroid Field battle, the other happened to be a Rebel Rigger with a Heavy Laser and a Minibeam, and that Heavy Laser and Minibeam just happened to deal 3 damage to my weapons about 2 seconds before the Glaive fully charged. I bet you guys I beat the flagship on this run.
