Why would an enemy boarding party choose to kill your ship from the inside out rather then the crew, thus sparing their own lives and gaining some more loot?

Because their boarding AI is set to "sabotage" rather than "invasion".
A mod could change that, though I imagine that would ratchet the difficulty up yet another step further.

Haha, that's funny. It was one of those instances where you jump next to the sun with no enemy ship in sight and 4 guys teleport onto your ship. With only 4 hull HP, I knew I had no time to try and coax them into the healing bay.
