I would argue that if you manage to get a drone recovery arm in the first sector, the torus becomes the best ship in the game.

what are the odds of that happening though, i haven't seen a drone recovery arm in any store i have visited.

i think my greatest source of annoyance with the torus so far is random events give weapons alot more often than drone schematics. example: i am flying the torus and rescue an engi ship from a mantis. after the battle i choose the special engi only dialog option, which repairs my ship, marks a system on my map, and gives me a weapon instead of a drone schematic. you'd figure an engi npc of all people would know better...

even if you don't ever get drone recovery arm, the torus is one of the easier ships to use.

Every ship benefits from def drone 1 (to help deal with missiles). Starting with Drone control helps immensely. Yes, only having 3 weapon slots can be a drawback, but a fourth weapon slot is not as useful as you may think with a Hard weapon power maximum/cap of eight, and most weapons requiring at LEAST 2 power to use with many requiring 3 power.

put in simpler terms, it's going to be rarer that you actually have that 4th weapon slot in use in late game. But drone control/def drone 1 is awesome all the time.

Add in the engi heal augment, and you have boarder def assistance, as well as less tedium/upkeep post battle. (you can just alt tab rather than do the medbay shuffle :P)

I just unlocked the second layout for the torus, and it's completely different (which is an amazing idea). It has a different augment (one that benefits robot based drones), and starts with only 1 crew.. layout B will be interesting.. Already I'm not sure it's going to be as powerful as the torus.. but I'll come back and post more after playing it a bit.
