[Squad] Chess Pawns

This mod adds a custom chess themed squad to the game. It is based on the original Chess Squad by AUTOMATIC, though has been redesigned for better compatibility and balance.


Prime Class: Knight Mech
  • Health: 3
  • Move: 2
  • Armored
The knight mech moves in normal knight movements, meaning 2 spaces on one axis, then 1 space on the opposite axis. Upgrading movement allows the knight to move 3 spaces in a single direction. Further upgrades extend the amount of leaps a knight can make in a single direction.

Weapon: Knight Smite
  • Jumps to a location, killing units with health less than the mech's. Deals self damage based on target's remaining health.
  • Weapon cannot target shielded enemies, but can target damaged mountains.
  • Upgrades:
    • Push: Pushes adjecent units when landing.
    • -1 Self Damage: Reduces self damage by 1.

Brute Class: Rook Mech
  • Health: 3
  • Move: 7
The rook mech can move up to 7 spaces on a single axis. If his move speed is over 7, then any move over 7 can be used to move on a second axis.

Weapon: Castle Charge
  • Fly in a line and slam into a target, tossing it where you started.
  • Can target mountains to throw a rock to your starting position.
  • Upgrades:
    • Push: Pushes units to the side of where the target lands.
    • +2 Damage: Increases damage to by 2.

Ranged Class: King Mech
  • Health: 2
  • Move: 1
  • Flying
The king mech can move a single space in any of the 8 directions, like a chess king. The first movement upgrade adds +1 to both orthogonal and diagonal movement, and later upgrades alternate orthogonal and diagonal.

Weapon: Spawn Pawn
  • Deploy a pawn at the target location. You can have up to one pawns active at a time.
  • Pawns:
    • Health: 1
    • Move: 2 (straight lines)
    • Weapon: Pawn Spear - Deals 1 melee damage and pushes target, or can attack diagonally for no push.
  • Upgrades:
    • +1 Pawn: Can have up to 2 active pawns at a time.
    • Explosive: Pawns explode when killed, dealing 2 damage to adjacent tiles. Pawns can be deployed on water or in holes to immediately explode.



This mod contains achievements for beating each game length with the Chess Pawns plus for getting a perfect 30000 victory. In addition, the mod includes three squad achievements, completing them all will unlock a special bonus.


1. Install kartoFlane's modloader
2. Unpack the archive to your mods directory (<steam>\steamapps\common\Into the Breach\mods).


  • AUTOMATIC: Created the original mod idea. Most of the assets and some of the code is reused with permission from his mod.
  • tosx: Reused some code from a few of his squad mods, notably reference for shop and preview libs and the pawn coloring logic.
  • Lemonymous: Wrote several libraries used in this mod and designed the white palette.

For those of you who played AUTOMATIC's original chess squad, below is a summary of the changes:

  • General
    • Made movement upgrades less powerful and fully utilize the movement amount
    • Added power costs to base weapons
    • All weapons are randomly available in the store
  • King Mech
    • Switched from prime class to ranged class
    • Increased health
    • Pawn push upgrade replaced with range upgrade
    • Pawns use alternating forms of the kings pallet instead of always being yellow
  • Knight Mech
    • Switched from brute class to prime class
    • Now takes self damage equal to damage dealt
    • Added upgrades
  • Rook Mech
    • Replaced quad shot with castle charge
    • No longer flying, blocked by obstacles
    • Redesigned art

Just released mod version 1.1.0 (download)

Summary of changes (see here for a full changelog)
  • Added tutorial tips and traits to explain all custom moves and their upgrades
  • Improved knight targeting, but reduced max health
  • Rook can now target mountains to throw a rock
  • Rook throw upgrade is now default. New push upgrade
  • King exploding pawns costs more, but can now target water
  • Add achievements. Completing the three squad achievements will unlock a special bonus.
  • Fix some interactions between certain mechs and certain pilots.

Just released version 1.3 of this mod. Changes:

  • Supports Into the Breach 1.2, requires modloader 2.5.1
  • Mechs now use a custom white palette
  • Reduced the default number of pawns for the king mech to 1
  • Replaced Spawn Pawn's +1 Range upgrade with a +1 Pawn upgrade
  • Give pawns the option to attack diagonally for 1 damage with no push.
  • Fixed one shot achievement triggering when attacking bosses deploys from Bots'n'Bugs
  • Fixed tooltips showing on some wrong screens

I'm probably an idiot, but can someone help me with how to active achievments for this mod? It clearly shows in mod settings, but when I choose the squad it shows the achievments for the squad that was being replaced by this one. Thanks!

Mod achievements only appear in the mod menu; you have to view which ones you've unlocked there.
