Unless I'm running a boarder heavy crew, I almost always grab doors 3 ASAP. The ease of suffocating enemy boarders is easy as hell with doors 3. Pretty much the only time I don't bother is with Crystal ships, and that's only because the lockdown ability can barricade doors.

It really shines when combined with cloaking though. The Zoltan Shield denies boarders. Couple it with a Stealth to dodge the first volley (keeping your Zoltan shield) and you have enough time to destroy their teleporter or their ship entirely without dealing with their boarders at all.

Eh, believe it or not, but some people actually make use of steam 24/7. Myself included. I still find it hilarious that you insist that boarding is useless. You DON'T have to abuse the AI to make it useful. I drop a small bomb in their medbay (if they have one, and honestly, they don't until MUCH later in the game), teleport my two mantis units into their ship, and just lol as they die ...

If I'm boarding, I'm usually boarding every time I can. I usually have all of my fighters maxed out way before I actually get to sector 8. If I'm not boarding, then who cares if you're losing out on combat experience.
