That might be the resolution setting you're using. Have you tried setting the game in windowed mode?

You could also try something gimmicky or ridiculous, like a chain flak or anti-bio artillery. Why do something normal like another drone ship?

Check this crazy out: Youtube link. The defense drone fires that laser after it got blown up. It looks like defense drone didn't really die until after their explosion animation ends. With, say, a 30-second long explosion animation, (frying wires, anyone?) it might be possible to make (semi-) invinc...

I used The Black Opal (one of the mods in my post up there) because they were both made by 5thHorseman at around the same time. No idea if it will still work with AE right now though.

Bombs do the same job missiles do, but better. They don't do hull damage but in exchange they can't be shot down by drones.

I'm surprised to find that Charge Lasers are actually good. They do take extra time to charge up to full, but the time it takes to fire a single laser repeatedly on autofire is actually very fast.
