I've seen an AI ship with 4.5 shields, but never a full 5. I can only assume that ships in a given sector are given roughly the same number of upgrades. My only issue is that the two Mantis can't kick the crap out of the human after the jump, and then just charge the FTL and jump back. I understand the game isn't designed to account for this (I don't think even a mod could do it), but it just seems so silly to lose fights that have basically already...

I would bet a single missile/bomb weapon would have saved your butt, or at least give you a much better fighting chance. Plus between dodging and high shields, non-beam drones and lasers are hilariously weak. For future reference though, there is a not-very-obvious trick to dealing with drones. You ...
