Today was an interesting turn of events. Early on, as we were warming up the scientific equipment, the station was hailed by an Engi craft. The hull seemed to be streaked with scorches and scars, as if from some brutal combat. We were very surprised to find it manned by a human, who was actually a mercenary seeking aid. We allowed him to dock with the station and rest a bit while we had a few maintenance drones to patch up the damages on his apparently pirated craft.
It seems this human was a wanted criminal in Engi space- or at least, he was about to be. He was slightly troubled about how to repay us, as he didn't have a lot of scrap or resources to barter. We unanimously decided to take a tour of the Engi craft to see if there was anything he could easily give away to us.
Strangely enough, one of the storage chambers held a stasis pod; it seemed to have malfunctioned in whatever encounter this ship took place, as the Engi apparently held inside was in preserved pieces. We accepted the stasis pod as payment; no doubt the Engi himself could contribute much to our sciences, regardless of his vitality- or lack thereof, in this case. The mercenary gave us a few funny looks, but he didn't question anything as he set off as soon as his ship was in working order.
A low-grade autopsy was difficult in this case, but it showed this Engi was certainly... dead, I suppose in this case. We've spent the rest of of our hours re-purposing the stasis pod as a storage device that should also be able to interface and modify the Engi's inner workings. Hopefully we'll learn a lot from this study.
We shall seek to learn and to inform.

It is clear now why there was so much ambiguity on whether or not the Engi were purely mechanical: their internal composition is so similar to any other carbon-based life form that they could easily be mistaken for organic components.
Much of the aforementioned body had been dissolved into nanites through our processes. We are now conducting experiments as to what extent it would be possible to manipulate these nanties; that is, what the nanites are capable of doing besides simulating life. Among the possible hypothesis are how the Engi are able to interface with electronics, and how they have such natural prowess in construction.
There is a certain measure of excitement present in the station, but also a touch of uncertainty. What will we actually find?

We have recently confirmed the completion of an experiment with the nanite remains. While we were able to easily emulate typical organic components with the nanite array, we decided to try an create a completely artificial lifeform; in this case, a carbon-based lifeform that follows as few conventional aspects of a standard carbon-based lifeform as possible. Needless to say, it was a difficult and interesting project to conduct.
After some time, though we were able to create a sort of metallic creature that gleaned energy to survive by using radiation to transmute metals within its body, with the resulting excess energy becoming a replacement sort of ATP for this creature. We were able to observe its patterns for awhile, but we couldn't keep it alive forever.
One of the other lead scientists, Blake, confronted me as the experiment was initially meeting its end. He admitted that he actually manipulated the project in order to test a personal idea he had. Blake had wanted to try and recreate an alien species known only in ambiguity as the Lanius. He shared a compiled list of details and theories surrounding the Lanius, and how he wanted to test these by trying to use the nanites to recreate these aliens.
I did not at all blame him for these things, but what happened afterwards made me reconsider. A combination of the low-oxygen alarm and the containment breath alarm announced a grave danger: the specimen had escaped somehow. I will not go into details, but we did manage to subdue it before it broke through the station hull. Unfortunately, we lost 3 fellow scientists and 11 hours doing so, as we needed to create a virus necessary to disable the nanites.
It was a terrible accident, that's for sure. We're keeping the specimen's remains in dormant stasis. Meanwhile, we've started creating a more controlled emergency virus to use aboard the station, due to the fact that our original virus has somehow left the station. Yesterday we granted hospitality to an errant Federation craft on the run from the Rebellion; perhaps the virus escaped aboard that old Kestrel-class cruiser. That virus was only designed to deconstruct nanite-based lifeforms, so it shouldn't be harmful unless they pass through an Engi-controlled area.
Either the way, it is unanimous we are not at all daring to use the nanites again until we have an effective way to combat it in case of emergency.

Unfortunately, we lost 3 fellow scientists and 11 hours doing so, as we needed to create a virus necessary to disable the nanites.
It was a terrible accident, that's for sure. We're keeping the specimen's remains in dormant stasis. Meanwhile, we've started creating a more controlled emergency virus to use aboard the station, due to the fact that our original virus has somehow left the station. Yesterday we granted hospitality to an errant Federation craft on the run from the Rebellion; perhaps the virus escaped aboard that old Kestrel-class cruiser. That virus was only designed to deconstruct nanite-based lifeforms, so it shouldn't be harmful unless they pass through an Engi-controlled area.
Either the way, it is unanimous we are not at all daring to use the nanites again until we have an effective way to combat it in case of emergency.
We shall seek to learn and to inform.
