How to reinstall mods after FTL upgrade (Updated - 9/22/13)

Postby boa13 » Mon Dec 24, 2012 7:42 am

When FTL is updated, backups created by a Mod-Manager tool need to be removed or there is a risk the Mod-Manager will restore some files from an older version of FTL. This can lead to glitches in mods, compatibility issues or game crashes.

To remove backups do the following:

For SMM - Slipstream Mod Manager:

Delete the following files:
SMM/backup/data.dat.bak
SMM/backup/resource.dat.bak

Next time you run SMM, it will create new backups.

For GMM - Grognak's Mod Manager

Due to the way the Grognak's Mod Manager works, there might be glitches if you try to reinstall mods on a freshly updated FTL version, unless you follow the steps below!

splette wrote:It's related to the recent official FTL update. It replaces the data.dat and resource.dat files.
Now when you apply any mod, Grognaks Mod manager is not aware that these two files are new and will instead use the .bak files it had saved earlier. But these are from the previous FTL version and this is where things get mixed up.

Long story short:
After updating FTL, delete:
data.dat-unpacked (v1.5 or older)
resource.dat-unpacked (v1.5 or older)
data.dat.bak
resource.dat.bak

Only then use the Mod manager to apply any mods you like. (The mod manager will create new .bak of the up-to-date FTL version).

Thanks to splette for diagnosing the issue and writing these instructions.

When updating a Mod-Manager do the following:

Before you update or replace a Mod-Manager, restore backups so the next manager will see vanilla dats as it makes its initial backups. Simply run SMM or GMM, do not select any mods at all, and click Patch. This will restore vanilla files.

If you have not yet done so, it's highly recommended that you restore backups made by GMM, delete all files used by GMM and start using it's succesor SMM.

To forcibly restore FTL to a vanilla state:

For the standalone edition of FTL:
- uninstall the game.
- delete the folder it was installed in.
- delete SMM backups.
- reinstall.

For the Steam edition:
- delete your FTL/resources/ folder.
- delete SMM backups.
- use verify cache option in Steam.

This is usefull if your resources get corrupted. This does NOT remove your profile or reset achievements/unlocks!

So simple, yet so obvious. Image Why did this not occur to me before?
Well done, splette. If I could bake, you'd have a whole tray of cookies for that one.

I deleted the files and folders mentioned, loaded up the game (I am using High Res Textures mod and Disable Fleet mod), and the low res textures are still present, and the fleet still pursues heh.

I'm pretty sure I did as instructed, right?:

Delete:

- data.dat-unpacked (Folder)
- resource.dat-unpacked (Folder)
- data.dat.bak (File)
- resource.dat.bak (File)

Sounds like your core resource files are 'contaminated.' Best thing I can suggest in that case is to delete your resources\ folder and reinstall (or if using Steam, try verifying files first). For whatever reason, your .DAT files are still carrying around old data, so deleting their backups / GMM extraction folders isn't helping in this case.

I've thought about an uninstall and reinstall, I am worried (I mean, not that this matters to terribly much), but will doing so reset my in-game achievements?

Where would these files be located at?
