What would you like to see in sequels/expansions?

Postby anzuu7 » Thu Dec 13, 2012 4:44 am

Forgive me if there's a topic about this already (didn't see one?), but even if it's still rather early I'm curious as to what people think would be great to see in FTL2 or an expansion, if there will ever be such a thing.

In FTL the only thing I found less than stellar after a few playthroughs is the campaign. It was good, but I just wish there was MORE.

Instead of planning and setting up your ship for dealing with a pattern of "warp FIGHT warp FIGHT warp FIGHT" with a couple random events here and there, in a sequel/expansion I'd like to see a campaign that involves more freedom and exploration in a much larger universe. The game mechanics overall can stay exactly the same, I just wish I could enjoy my crew and ship for much longer--see how the setup would work against a giant universe (hundreds of stars! hundreds of events!) rather than just a string of enemy ships.
Heh. On that line of thought, I feel like the crew boarding system has a lot of potential for interactive events other than just text...."Scotty! Beam the away team down...we're gonna investigate this science station..."

People seem to have commented about the difficulty, the luck elements, and other things; what do you all think? What would you like to see in an expansion/sequel?

I would like to see the amount of crew and their skills to matter more for the random events. If I have 4 Mantises and 4 Rocks I would expect the Escape Pod (with a Mantis) or the Giant Space Spider Aliens to almost always be easy.

Maybe other game modes where the Rebel Fleet isn't an issue.

Longer missions, several steps where you can decide how to handle them.

Would love more of everything that already is in the game. More races with ships, events/encounters and more different sectors.

I would pay the same for pretty much just an expansion that is just more but if we're making wishes ...

I wan't to remove the boss battle, and just keep on running. My enthusiasm for the game really took a knock when I found out that the game ended so jarringly. If you've taken a rough route to get there you know you're boned before you even start. I can't quite comprehend it from a designers point of view. It just makes puts me off playing.

Now, if we could head deeper and deeper into space we'd be on to something. Gradually increase the chance of running into tougher enemies, script in a whole new raft of random events, better weapons etc. Keep the permadeath. Let the journey become a saga. Crew histories, faction influence, infamy; it's all there for the taking. My head hurts with what FTL could become.

This game doesn't need a storyline; players make their own. At the moment however, we're only allowed to read the first chapter. :|

Yeah, infinite mode is requested a lot.

I would like a new race that you can unlock in the main game after going far enough in infinite mode or something.
I hate FTL...

But I love it at the same time...

Yeah, I would really like to see races having an impact on luck other than the blue options. Also add more blue options. Like crystal crew having more of an impact.

Also, maybe adding some combat in space stations? Just make a ship that you can't change airlocks and such, and have escort, antifire, or destroy missions in real-time, where you can control a crew with arrow keys and fire with mouse with different weapons.

Well, I can always imagine it. I want that, but I don't at the same time. If only I can shove Alien Swarm in Ftl...

It'd be cool to have a non campaign mode. No chasing rebels, just flying around the galaxy til you all die.

It'd be cool if there could be a sandbox mode that takes place after the rebel defeat (I'm assuming if you win the game the rebels are defeated, but knowing this game it could be a 50/50 thing) where you could choose depending on what ships you've unlocked to start as any of the factions, and then your actions influence your status with the factions. In each event, there'd be more choices. For example, you should be able to attack anyone you encounter. You could become an outlaw, mercenary, pirate, bounty-hunter, whatever.

Also, I think it'd be cool if the "send your crew in" options actually had you controlling your crew. If there's a ship on fire & you dock with it to help put out the fires/save survivors, you should be able to go in & try to do it. So in those situations you've got more opportunity to use skill then just hope for the best.

Haha overall it seems like most people are in general agreement with things that could be added.

What do you guys think about multiple ship combat? Like, there are lots of cases where you're escorting some ship or the like; I wonder if it'd be cool to not just command a single ship but an entire fleet FTL-style.

I don't know how the UI would fit everything (maybe swap ship views with the non-selected ship visible in the background?), but I think that might be a neat addition that'll add a LOT of variety and complexity to the combat.

For everyone who keeps requesting an "Infinite" sandbox mode, there's a mod for that. It's still being worked on, but is playable in its current form. While you can't control which sectors you hop to (no backtracking across Mantis Homeworld nodes, for instance), it's still a great deal of fun and probably about the best we can hope for short of being fully implemented by Justin & Matt.

I'd like to see a First Aid skill that lets you occupy the Med Bay to heal quicker anyone who is in need of healing.
