No sound on iPad Air 2 (no toggle switch)

After being away from the iPad version of the game for a while, I'm trying to get back into it, but 95% of the time when I open the app there is no sound. The iPad Air 2 doesn't have a toggle switch, so I can't do that workaround. I can't delete the app and reinstall because there's no way to back-up my save file anymore. Force quitting the app doesn't work; restarting my iPad doesn't work.

Any ideas?

Another possible workaround is to force quit FTL, then open the Music App and play something. Anything. Then force close the music app and try FTL again. You can force close apps by double tapping on the home button and swiping them off the list.
