I've always imagined it as sending your ship into Hyperspace - it doesn't actually move, it just leaves this "dimension" and travels into hyperspace. It zips along in hyperspace for a few seconds before dropping back into normal space.


To me, it had something to do with wormholes and you could only do that between beacons because you risk getting lost in space if you try and jump anywhere to anywhere without proper navigation software. Which is why the ship in-game can't just skip to the end and also why Advanced Navigation AI only works with "explored" beacons as you've got to calibrate the software.

Hyperspace is a scary place to consider although that's just my fanfic talking, mixed with Immortal Defense. Yeah no one really knows how it works but the idea is you can only jump between beacons for a reason...

Jake shut his eyes, and pressed the button to activate the jump sequence. The lights flickered. The voltage regulation screens showed massive drops in subsystem power, and spikes in engine power. There was a loud hiss and the ship begin to shake. Jake recalled from a textbook that in-atmosphere FTL jumps had never been attempted, as they were deemed too dangerous. Then... CRASH! The ship thrust around violently as it was sucked into a hyperspatial vortex, carrying some of the surrounding air along with it.

After that, there was a brief moment of peace. The lights no longer flickered, and there was no more rattling. During this small period, Jake took a look at the navigational computer, which read that the ship was in hyperspace.

But then, the ship rattled some more. Stars came into view on the main window as the ship jumped out of hyperspace. Jake smeared himself to the main window. The pure blackness of space, with little dots of light shining in the distance. Jake recognized a small metallic object floating in the distance, blinking steadily. A jump beacon Jake thought in disbelief. They had made it.

Jake turned on the intercom. "This is the captain of the Robin A. I am happy to confirm successful jump completion from the command room. Engine room, does your data concur with the result that this was a successful jump?" Jake said, merrily.

Before the engine room could reply, Jake was cut off by an incoming radio transmission. He put it on the intercom. "Unregistered vessel, this is the united Federation. Disable your weapons and shields and hand over your stolen vessel."

Lux fell to the ground as the ship jumped. A few bottles of pills landed on her as they slid out of a broken cabinet.
As she got back onto her feet, the ship emerged and she caught herself on a nearby counter. She gave out a very loud, shrill laugh. "Everything's fine over here!" she exclaimed, picking up the pills. Her head buzzed and she briefly considered just popping one of those pills she had brought onboard.
Mother always said that it was always a strange feeling whenever we jumped... she thought to herself, My father said he didn't feel a thing unless the jump wasn't done safely. I don't know who is more right...

Bren was used to the feeling of hyperspace travel, he only felt a slight pull on his stomach.

However when he heard the announcement on the com relay he began to sweat.

"Damn it, not the feds...Captain...your orders?" he called out

"I rather not fire on the federation that saved me, but you are in control of this ship, your orders" he asked

The ship rattled and eventually jumped, the lights flickering. Jake came over the comm and announced a successful jump. Kyrie was about to respond with 'That was the sketchiest jump ever' when she was interrupted by the federation transmission. "I think that's confirmation enough. Raising shields!" She went over to the window in the shield room and saw a federation patrol ship approaching, weapons charging.

It was then Kyrie remembered the ideas her family had taught her since birth, one of which was to be absolutely loyal to the federation. Now not only were they stealing a historic ship from a museum, but, if they weren't careful, they were also about to fire on a federation ship. Kyrie winced at what her parents would do if they were caught. Maybe this wasn't a good idea after all.

"We arn't going to destroy the federation ship. And with a ship like this, we wouldn't be able to if we tried. Power down all weapons, that'll make us look kinda friendly, I guess. Power the shields to their maximum capacity, so we can hold-out as long as possible, if the feds begin to fire. Power up our engines to maximum capacity, so we can evade as much as possible too, and also so our FTL can charge faster. If we don't have enough power for max shields and max engines, power down anything we can spare. And, actually, power down the 02. Just trust me. Also, I need a full sensor sweep of our enemy - I want to know what kinda weapons they got locked onto us right now."

The idea here was to hold out against the federation patrol as long as possible - enough time to jump far away without, ya know, dying. With shields fully raised and evasion at max, we might be able to stall enough for the FTL to charge.

Jake signaled the federation patrol.
"Yo... uh... this is Jake, captain of the Robin A. As you know this ship hasn't flown in quite a while, and we are just cadets. We're having trouble lowering our shields... I know it sounds silly, but our shield controls seem to be... locked... give us a minute..."

"This is Federation Patrol #74230. Manually cut power to your shields immediately. Another patrol equipped with a transporter will arrive shortly and escort you off of your ship." Jake cut the transmission and hopped on the intercom.

"Guys, we need to be outta here before the other patrol arrives. Apparently they are equipped with a transporter. Send our lovely Zoltan crew member to the Engine room to boost some power to the engines. And where the hell is that sensor sweep I asked for???"

Then Jake signaled the Fed ship again, "Our 02 seems to have shut down. If you do a scan, you can confirm our 02 system is offline. We will have to focus our efforts on fixing that before powering down the shields. Sorry for the delay!"

"Negative. Shut down your shields immediately." The federation vessel replied.

"Sorry, but if we do that we'll all suffocate before you can arrest us! Don't worry, it'll only be a small delay. hehe..." Jake nervously cut the transmission. That 02 trick would only buy them a little time.

You guys can select how much your respective systems have been upgraded. (For example,
if you work in the Shields room, you can decide how many shield bubbles we have.) Just remember, this ship is 80 years old!

currently I say our weapons are at 2 bars with only 2 old lasers


Bren lowered the weapons, diverting all the power to the shields.

"Heading to the Engine room!' he called out running as fast as he could to the engine room. He made it inside and saw the engine, "Never thought I'd have to do this again' he said to himself gettign flash backs to the slavers using his energy body to power their systems.

He went to the engine and touched it, focusing, "Alright don't distract me, if I screw this up I might drain the power" he said focusing his being to keep the engines charged

Because the ship is old and using medical supplies and equipment that are far outdated, I'd say the medbay definitely reeks of barely even being considered a "Level 1" medbay.

"Luxanna Jensen, you are hereby expelled from the Federation Academy and placed under maximum security in the New Sol Juvenile Detention Facility for a period of one million years!"
The judge then lowered her glasses, revealing the cold purple eyes of her mother... "I am also very disappointed in you. What would your father say?"

Lux gritted her teeth and waited for more answers from the crew about what they were up against; she had done a cursory sweep of the sensors before she had settled into the medbay. The technology was something she never had trained on; not at the Academy or even when her father gave impromptu lessons on ship operations when she was a little girl barely able to walk.
In her mind, it would probably require someone who could easily handle old technology.
One hand was on the holster of her blaster pistol though, just in case.

I'd say the shields are probably at the equivalent of one or one and a half bubble with the extra power because of its age and disuse.

A frown appeared on Kyrie's face as the captain ordered the oxygen to be shut down. She powered up the shields to max with the extra power, but still doubted they would give much resistance to the patrol's superior firepower. Still, it was at least something. I have a feeling that's going to be a recurring theme... If we make it that far. Kyrie tried to put aside thoughts like that and focus on the console.

The patrol still loomed in the window, keeping the standard distance for maneuvering around other ships in space, approximately 5km. Why is that the only thing I remember from the space travel unit? Jake's commands for the engines came over the comms, startling her. Kyrie was becomeing more and more nervous as time went by, thinking more and more that this was a bad idea.

I'll choose the standard kestrel layout,
with the ship containing level 2 engines, but only have one bar of energy powering it


WOL had barely noticed the zoltan's presence, as he was much too busy inputting commands into the engine's monitor. On the outside, he worked with the same calmness and precision as any other Engi, the one that gave off the impression that he knew what the hell he was doing. On the inside however, a flurry of thoughts Cascade d within his head. "Caught so soon?" "Why did I ever agree to this plan?" "How will this turn out?". However, he kept his thoughts to himself, for now he had to focus on the task at hand, just as he's always done during stressful situations
