its pretty easy to learn you just need to get used to it. Once you are it feels pretty natural to move with the keys and its easier on your hands then the arrow keys.

Also, I'm sad that no one mentioend the founder of the genre, Rogue itself.

FTL graphics are pixelated/messy?
Find the game's settings.ini file and add 'swapTexture=1' there. Said file should be in [steam directory]/steamapps/common/ftl

Seconded. TBOI is a great little action/adventure rouge which was inspired from the NES original Zelda.
Give it a go, you will not be disappointed.

Dungeons of Dredmor is a lot of fun and Crawl (DCSS) is a solid choice. :)

ADOM is one of my favorite games ever. Incredibly deep and challenging game... it took me four years to successfully finish the game, so it's rather not for the casual gamers ;-) But if you take the time, this is as true gem!
