On normal, no less. I guess watching Dewmahn and Darthcaboose stream prepared me way too much for this, even though I lucked out and got another burst laser II right in the second sector.
Hard mode incoming?

I've played like 60 games and only managed to get to the boss once or twice, and even then I've never come close to beating him.

I watched plenty, but it didn't help me. I call luck and skill.
My first runthrogh (on easy no less) ended in getting torched by a sun. :p
The second ended in me stupidly getting all my crew killed.
Sigh.... Much to learn I have.

Re: My first playthrough ever and I won?
I think the most important techniques I've learned by watching streams were properly assessing if an encounter should be avoided, upgrade priorities and if I had to pick the most important one I'd say it's how Caboose almost always went for that bit of extra dodge early on, makes a world of difference.
It's not the surprise bad luck encounter that ends most games, it's the constant damage buildup added to a lack of proper resource and route managing.

I've got maybe 46 now, I've been trying to lay off it for a while so I don't lose all interest in it once it's released
