EPIPHANY - FTL is the ORGEON TRAIL of this Generation

Postby LONCHIVAR » Thu Mar 14, 2013 8:52 pm

I don't know why I did not think of this before.

Perhaps it is because in FTL you fly your ships from left to right... West to East and in the classic 1985 computer game on the Apple you drove your ox covered wagon from right to left... East to West.

Manifest destiny comes in all shapes, sizes, directions and venues.

I loved the game Oregon Trail as a young person. I would rocket through my work in the computer lab so I could boot up and see if I could beat my buddy Brad's high score.

It was SOOOO frustrating when you were having a great game and suddenly your wagon just burst into flames.

It was SOOOO frustrating when the cheerleader you secretly had a crush on was riding shotgun with you in your covered wagon got the measles and died.

It was SOOOO frustrating when a wagon sank in about 3 feet of water.

And that is what made that game fun.

There are new terms like ROGUE and PERMADEATH in games today... and I am big fan of games with big big consequences.

I really think that OREGON TRAIL was the pioneer of such games.

I hope that creators of FTL read these words. I wonder if they ever played OREGON TRAIL.

I have found a wonderful webpage that lets you play the game from those glorious days of yesteryear.

If any body can beat the score of 8139 please let me know!

I have been looking and looking and have not found a score to beat that one.

I have to have a "Proud Papa" moment now and then.

Good hunting Captains!

This is just a fun game.

FTL is more fun... that is for sure... but somebody had to pave the way.

It can't be the Oregon Trail of this generation until someone puts it in a classroom.

I'll have to work on getting FTL in the classroom!
