How do you survive past the mid-game on hard?

Great game, found about it when Epic gave it for free. However, I simply can not understand how I am supposed to proceed past the middle of the game on hard.
Spawned enemies outnumber you right from the get go, and you can never one-shot them, unless they stop near a hazard. I find myself bleeding grid points every game, and I have yet to reach the boss on Island 3. I have been trying to make my favourite team, the Flaming Behemoths, work, but their attacks are mostly useful for pushing bugs at that point: it takes forever to kill anything with fire damage
How do you do carry on?
