[MOD][WIP] Starcraft Total Conversion

I'm sure you saw the title?

Ambitious project If I do say so myself, But hopefully I'll be able to get this going pretty quick and easily!

Starcraft Total Conversion

A total conversion in-case you are unaware is what happens when a Mod attempts to change the majority of a game into a different theme. For example, If you were to Mod a Medieval themed game into a Sci-fi themed one.

For this mod, I will be attempting to remake the look and theme of FTL into Starcraft. (Many of the gameplay elements MAY or MAY not be the same.)

The Ideas:

1. Convert all of the player ships into starcraft ships:
Kestrel Type A into Viking
Kestrel Type B into Medivac

Stealth Type A into Banshee
Stealth Type B into Wraith

Mantis Type A into Overlord
Mantis Type B into Broodlord

Engi Type A into Raven
Engi Type B into Science Vessel

Federation Cruiser Type A into Battlecruiser
Federation Cruiser Type B into Under Thinking/Consideration

Slug Cruiser Type A into Devourer
Slug Cruiser Type B into Queen (Starcraft I not II)

Rock Cruiser Type A into Under Thinking/Consideration
Rock Cruiser Type B into Under Thinking/Consideration

Zoltan Cruiser Type A into Under Thinking/Consideration
Zoltan Cruiser Type B into Void Ray

Unidentified Cruiser Type A into Under Thinking/Consideration
Unidentified Cruiser Type B into Warp Prism

2. Races to be converted into different Starcraft units:

Humans into Marines
Zoltans into High Templar
Mantis into Zerglings
Slugs into Under Thinking/Consideration
Engi into SCVs
Rock into Zealots or Marauders (Not sure yet.)
Crystal into Under Thinking/Consideration

3. Change the Dialog to match Starcraft theme.

4. Achievements may or may not be changed.

5. Weapons May or May not be changed.


Everything is SUBJECT to CHANGE.

I will allow for people to suggest/give ideas and to give criticism/support.
All of the Starcraft Assets will be completely made/remade by me.

I would play the crap out of this and would love it even more with good art. If you need some one to do ship design I would be down though I am crap all at coding.

Medivac would be a fun ship. Would probably have a good transporter and healing bay and healing bombs as their only weapon.

Zoltans should be High Templar not Zealots because they suck at fighting.

Crystals could be Archons.

Yeah I am actually thinking about making the rockmen zealots and not the zoltans.

That's a huge project.

Have you considered using the SC2 model viewer to make sprites? If you are doing a total conversion there is little reason to stick with the style of sprite used by FTL. Using the SC2 models as a base for sprites would also speed things up considerably, making it mainly a matter of coding.

Could you explain more? Perhaps an example?

If you mean taking the 3D model and using it in the game, that would likely be odd with all of the 2D aspects like the weapons, backgrounds, rooms etc.

I already use the a combination of the 3D models and CGI versions of the ships for spriting basis. I also enjoy doing the spriting.

Yes, taking a screenshot of the - for example - battle cruiser in the model viewer and then using it as a ship sprite.

This would look odd with the rest of the game being so pixelated, which is why you would also change the UI (I thought that was implied in a 'total conversion'). If you are familiar with Blizzard archive architecture, you can easily pull out elements of the SC2 GUI (as well as sounds!) for use in your project.

As it stands, you would have a TONNE of spriting to do and it would be hard to get it to look right.

I already intended on changing the UI, but I would much rather keep a 2D look to the game rather than a 3D one.
