Changing ingame images?

So I've got a very, very simple question. I've used Paint.net to remove the red and yellow 'halos' around crew/enemy crew (unless you're selecting them, of course) since that effect always screwed with immersion for me. So... how do I package these files so I can load them to my game?

Okay, I need some help. For some reason this ship makes the game crash out. I went in and edited manually after positioning the rooms, so the graphics wouldn't distort- and now it creates a runtime error and crashes. I've got a different bug to report- for some reason if I resize any room, or even some I don't touch, the room itself ends up horribly, horribly distorted. As if the location were moved but the original dimension data was left untouched. Did I bork something by not exporting something I should have?

erm, so yeah. I get the flash-and-gone error on the CMD window plus something new despite the fact that I have extracted the files apparently, it insists it has no idea where C:\program files(86x)\GOG.com\Faster Than Light\data\\blueprints.xml is. Why is there a double slash? Also how do I freaking ...

Drat. Well, can I still push them back? Cos as it is it seems all I can do is attack the same dang fighter, but the 'red tide' of rebel influence continues as if I weren't even there.

Okay, I realise this might be a dead forum but I'm trying to figure how to edit weapons on my save- just weapons, nothing else, so that I can actually have a matching set for once.

...help? I've tried using a hex editor but I can't figure out exactly what to edit or where! x.x
