The Red Tail is extraordinarily powerful early game, however it suffers because the starting weapons NEED to be replaced to beat the game. The Kestrel's Missile and Burst Laser are useful even endgame.

I hate when people complain about boarding. Level 2 doors will allow you to avoid any and all fights with boarders without ever having to directly fight them. Start venting all empty rooms as soon as you notice they have a teleporter. As soon as they board, lock all the doors then cut the O2. Bam, d...

I wouldn't really say that boarding ships have THAT big of a problem. A single bomb with a boarding ship will make the rest of the game a cakewalk.

It'd be workable with a slight change of the story. Make the current flagship an important logistics ship (refueling, communications, etc) that's vital to the Rebel Fleet and you're golden. If you want really want to shake it up, make it so that they stay back behind the front lines with a real flag...

Honestly, the lack of shields isn't really that big of a problem considering you start with stealth. You can put away most ships in the early sectors without ever getting hit. If all you have is the Engi Cruiser, then you haven't beaten the boss. You should have the Federation Cruiser if that was true. That said, I unlocked most of the ships without having to use a guide. Just aim for the homeworlds of the ships you're looking for, usually while having one of them on board.
